Malaysian Super Red Masheer (Tor/Kelah Bara)

Kelah is a fish from the genus Tor. The general name of 'mahseer' (Indian for 'big head') is popularly used. In the nothern parts of India, mahseer is also called 'kurriah' or 'kukhiah' ,whilst our kejor (tengas) is called 'kajra'.
There is high possibility that the name of kelah is derived from these terms. After all, the Hindu civilization was the earliest to entrench itself in the Malaysia Peninsular.

As u can view the red color have not develop yet. It is known that the Kelah Bara only starts to shows its true characteristics when its about 10" in size.

Can u see the intense amber color on the larger Kelah compared to the smaller ones?
The real beauty of Kelah Bara starts when its about 14"-15".

Hey bro,
For discussion purpose, whats your opinion about the difference between "kelah bara" and " bara tembat " ?
Till this day they are still cat as kelah bara or kelah merah.

There is only 1 type of kelah bara, its caught in sungai/Lubuk tembat. others are only known as kelah merah. Kelah bara is when the fish is amber not red. kelah merah Kelantan is pinkish & kelah merah pahang is red. there is no difference between kelah bara n bara tembat. If its caught in rivers other then tembat, its kelah merah or grades lower like emas, lipan etc. higher grade then kelah bara is kelah biru and kelah bara blood red. kelah biru is only found 1:50000 tails n blood red 1:100000 tails. kelah biru is RM800@5" n blood red is RM1200@5".

Looks the same, whats the type in ur pic. u might think its tengas. did u check the under part of its mouth? when they r small its very diff to differentiate. but when they r grown, its a totally diff story...

I bought as a Malaysian Blue Kelah. For red kelah I still know abit for blue wise my knowledge of them is still limited.
Heard from the LFS that blue in malaysia is still quite rare compared to thailand which are plentiful.

the largest is know of is 8.5KG, about 30"... red
blue... should be the same.... never have seen one yet...

yup, blue is super rare in Malaysia. its to difficult to diff a blue kelah wif a tengas when they are small, coz of the blue kelah's rounded face.
